Zugdidi District Court on Friday sentenced bank-robber Badri Esebua to 13 years in prison.
The prosecutor’s office requested a maximum jail term of 15 years. The defense will appeal the verdict in the Court of Appeal.
Esebua, armed with firearms and hand grenades, had broken into the Bank of Georgia branch in the western Georgian town of Zugdidi in October 2020 and initially had taken 43 people hostage releasing part of them later on. He demanded $ 500,000 and safe passage.
Esebua was arrested on February 8, 2023.
