World Rugby apologizes to Georgia

World Rugby apologizes for putting on the Russian song at the stadium during the Georgia-Uruguay match.

As a reminder, on September 29, during the match when Georgia scored tries, a song by Valeri Meladze was playing at the stadium.

At a press conference after the match, Georgian rugby player Jaba Bregvadze asked the organizers not to make such a mistake again. The head coach of the Georgian team Milton Haig also made a statement.

“The singer is ethnically Georgian; however this is a Russian song. Georgia is not Russia. We have a different language and culture. Please remember this” – Milton Haig said.

According to World Rugby spokesman, the organization expresses regret for this mistake.

“We sincerely apologize to our Georgian friends for this inconvenience. We discussed this incident with the organizers so that it would never happen again, ” – the spokesperson said.

At Rugby World Cup Georgia will hold the next match against Fiji in Osaka. It will kick off at 09:15 Tbilisi time, October 3. Georgian First Channel will provide its live transmission.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup is being held in Japan from September 20 to November 2.
