US condemns attack in Idlib which killed 33 Turkish soldiers

The US State Department has expressed its alarm at the escalating developments in Idlib province of Syria while coming out in support of Turkey, and citing Iran as partly responsible.

“We stand by our NATO ally Turkey and continue to call for an immediate end to this despicable offensive by the Assad regime, Russia, and Iranian-backed forces,” a State Department representative said in a statement. “We are looking at options on how we can best support Turkey in this crisis.”

Turkish officials said that at least 33 Turkish soldiers were killed in an airstrike in Syria’s Idlib province, in a dramatic escalation in the battle for control of the country’s last opposition stronghold. More than 30 others were injured.

A Turkish convoy, part of reinforcements sent to the area to aid rebel groups earlier this month, was subjected to heavy shelling on Thursday morning.
