US Ambassador to Georgia not to welcome legislative changes to harass the opposition

Kelly Degnan, the US ambassador to Georgia, disagrees with the legislative amendments that may harass the opposition. The Ambassador said that commenting on a bill to cut state funding to political parties.

“I do not agree with the initiative and any legislative changes that would impose harassment on the opposition or restrict their access to the media. The voter must have the full information he or she needs to hold the next leaders accountable. I hope this bill is reviewed before adoption. Georgia’s democracy now needs a developed, successful opposition and a responsible, effective ruling party,” Kelly Degnan told TV Company Formula.

At the same time, she stressed that Georgian voters supported nine parties, and a single-party parliament would be an unfortunate setback.

“The single-party parliament will be a very unfortunate setback. Voters chose nine parties. It was a clear statement. They wanted a diverse representation in parliament,” Kelly Degnan said.
