UNM to announce further steps at Freedom Square rally today

The opposition United National Movement (UNM) party will hold a protest rally to demand ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s release at Freedom Square in Tbilisi on Thursday.

The UMM, however, called on everybody ‘tired of the regress, destruction of institutions, economy, depreciation of the national currency as well as corruption and criminal situation’ to join.

“UNM and ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s supporters, other parties, non-partisan members, civil activists and others, who are well aware of their responsibility to the country, will attend the protest on Thursday,” UNM member Gia Baramidze claimed.

According to Baramidze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party spares no effort to prevent a large-scale manifestation. However, the UNM will not stop, and protests will continue in the regions.

The UNM is said to prepare for runoff elections scheduled for October 30 that will decide the fate of early parliamentary elections in the country.

UNM member Zaal Udumashvili said he hoped that bulks of people would join the protest and that ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili would soon leave the jail. He said the party would announce its further action plan at the October 14 rally.

The opposition United National Movement (UNM) aims to hold a large-scale protest rally in Tbilisi on October 14 in support and solidarity with imprisoned ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike since the very first day of his arrest.
