UNM: Halting state funding not to ease political crisis

“Halting state funding to political parties would not normalize the ongoing political process,” the opposition United National Movement (UNM) member Davit Kirkitadze said on Wednesday.

Kirkitadze believes such moves of the ruling Georgian Dream party would hardly help to ease the political crisis.

“However, we remember what the current Parliament Chairman said regarding the state funding a few years ago. Double standards. He considered financing political parties was a good decision that should not depend on a boycott by the political forces. Today, his approach changed radically. The only way to ease the crisis is to hold early elections. It is an approved method in parliamentary democracies,” Kirkitadze stressed.

Earlier, the ruling Georgian Dream initiated a bill aimed at state funding termination if political parties refuse to take up their mandates. MPs of these would not receive salaries, and they would not be able to use free media time during municipal and parliamentary elections.
