Traditional church music assigned status of non-material cultural heritage monument

Georgian traditional church music was assigned the status of non-material cultural heritage monument on May 31, Folklore Center reported.

According to the Center, the fact will help to preserve the cultural phenomenon and values of Georgian church singing.

“Church singing, besides its being multi-voice folklore, is recognized as one of the most important symbols of the national identity. It is a unique tradition combining national and Christian thinking with aesthetic principles,” Folklore Center said.

The center hopes that assigning the status will help popularization of church music among youngsters and drawing interest of public and scientific circles.
