The Telegraph - British spies blame Russian intelligence unit for cyber attack on Georgia

British Security services have blamed the Russian intelligence ‘Sandworm’ unit for a cyberattack on Georgia, amid fears it could be the start of a wider destabilisation campaign, as The Telegraph reports.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab described the online assault, which downed Georgia’s broadcasters and websites in October, as “totally unacceptable”.

The United States and Britain also weighed in, strongly condemning the alleged action by Russia in October. The U.S. joined a chorus of countries on Thursday in blaming Russia for a major cyberattack on the Republic of Georgia, pledging to hold the Kremlin accountable.

Back in October of 2019, the Georgian authorities accused Russia’s military intelligence of launching a large-scale cyberattack that targeted the government and private organisations with the goal of destabilising the country. A senior Russian diplomat dismissed the accusations.

The attack knocked thousands of websites offline, including those of the president, local government officials and television channels.
