Ten years after the Smolensk tragedy
Ten years after the Smolensk tragedy

April 10 marks the tenth anniversary of the Smolensk plane crash that killed 96 people including the Polish president, central bank chief and military commanders.

The crash in Smolensk is Poland’s national disaster. The crash that killed Poland’s president divided a country and reopened a historical rift with Russia. The divide became all-consuming.

Polish and Russian investigations both concluded that the crash was caused by human error in bad flying conditions.  But Jaroslaw Kaczynski and other Polish politicians never accepted this explanation. Political scars remain, as Financial Times said in the article.
