Tamar Chugoshvili: If Council of Justice not suspend appointment of judges for a lifetime, the Parliament should withdraw all five members from the Council, appointed by its quota

Tamar Chugoshvili, Vice-Speaker of Georgian Parliament states that if in the nearest future the Council of Justice does not make a statement on suspension of appointment of Supreme Court judges for lifetime tenure, the Parliament should withdraw all five members, appointed by Parliament’s quota, from the Council of Justice.

As Tamar Chugoshvili stated at the plenary session, the Council of Justice will not be able to make a decision without these members.

“I want to offer you one way. I would like to apologize to my colleagues, with whom I did not discuss this issue in advance, and should express my opinion directly from this rostrum. If the Council of Justice in the near future does not make a statement on the suspension of appointment of the judges for lifetime tenure, I think the way out of this situation is that the parliament should withdraw all five members appointed to the High Council of Justice according to our quota. Judges will not be able to make decisions without members appointed by us. This is ruled out. They appoint everyone with the support and votes of the members of the High Council of Justice appointed by us”- Tamar Chugoshvili said.
