Shigellosis detected in children hospitalized in Tskaltubo Municipality

Shigellosis, an infection of the intestines caused by Shigella bacteria, was detected in children, who were hospitalized in Tskaltubo Municipality of western Imereti region.

Paata Imnadze, Head of Scientific Council of National Center of Diseases Control, who arrived in Imereti region to inspect the current situation, reported that the infection was confirmed by analysis results.

According to Imnadze, a total of 26 children were hospitalized initially. Several kids have already been discharged from clinics. Food products at kindergartens are being checked by representatives of National Food Safety Agency. The study process is temporarily suspended.

Several kids were intoxicated at a kindergarten in Geguti village, Tskaltubo Municipality of western Imereti region. Similar facts were detected in five villages of Tskaltubo Municipality.
