Procedural Committee backs UNM Chair’s MP mandate termination

Parliamentary Procedural and Rules Committee backed the MP mandate termination to Chairman of the oppositional United National Movement (UNM) party Nika Melia.

Irakli Kadagishvili, Committee Chairman, said the Committee discussed the issue quickly in compliance with the set terms upon Melia’s application.

The UNM Chair applied to the parliament to quit his parliamentary authority on July 29. He said he was joining the race for the upcoming local elections that served as a referendum for early parliamentary elections.

“After winning the referendum, the current parliament will dissolve, and Georgia will have a new legitimate parliament,” Melia claimed. Other UNM lawmakers would keep their MP mandates, he added.

The local elections are scheduled for October 2 in Georgia.
