President of Venezuela slams sanctions imposed by US

Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s president, has hit out at the US after the Trump administration imposed the sanctions.

In a live national broadcast on Monday, Mr Maduro accused the United States of trying to steal US refining arm Citgo Petroleum, the OPEC member’s most important foreign asset, which also manages a chain of US gas stations. He said Venezuela would take legal actions in response.

US announced billions of dollars in new sanctions against disputed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the country’s state-owned oil monopoly PDVSA.

“Today’s designation of PDVSA will help prevent further diverting of Venezuela’s assets by Maduro and preserve these assets for the people of Venezuela,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said during a White House news conference.
