President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigns

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan, said on Tuesday he was resigning as the Central Asian nation’s leader after three decades in power. He made the comments in a televised address.

Nazarbayev has served as President of Kazakhstan since the office was created on 24 April 1990. He was named First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR in 1989, and was elected as the nation’s first president following its independence from the Soviet Union. Nazarbayev was re-elected as president with the fifth term in 2015.
