President to be elected with 6-year term

The Georgian population is electing the 5th president with the 6-year-term till 2023 today. This will be the last elections when President is elected through the direct rule.

The Georgian parliament approved the one-time presidential election through the direct rule by taking into consideration new Constitution of Georgia in March.

The ruling Georgian Dream Party made a political decision and named disagreement between the acting President Giorgi Margvelashvili and the ruling team.

As Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of Parliament explained, the initiative was admitted in the form of an exception to avoid political insinuations as if the ruling team was struggling against President Margvelashvili.

After October 28, 2018 presidential elections, President of Georgia will be elected by Election Collegiums, which will be staffed by members of parliament and 300 members of self-governance bodies from across the country.

The new Constitution will be enforced after the inauguration of the 5th President of Georgia.
