PM: Georgia’s aspiration to become EU member is not directed against any country, including Russia

“Georgia’s choice, our choice of European integration is not the choice of one particular government of political team, but the choice of the Georgian people, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili replied to a question by the press after his meeting with President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The question was as follows: What is Georgia prepared for in announcing that it is making ready to apply for EU membership in 2024? Especially given the Kremlin’s repeated statements claiming that Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration is viewed by Moscow as an attempt of sorts to instigate unrest in the region.

According to the Head of Government, Georgia’s aspiration to become an EU member is not directed against any country, including Russia.

“80% of our citizens support Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration, the reason why I totally understand your question. I understand that this may not be the scenario of choice for Russia, but this choice is irreversible. And we made this process irreversible when we signed the Association Agreement, also DCFTA, back in 2014. I believe that this answers the question, especially since this aspiration to become an EU member is not directed against any country, including Russia”, the Prime Minister said.

The Georgian political parties signed a compromise agreement, A Way Ahead for Georgia, submitted to the parties by the European Council President Charles Michel, at the Orbeliani Palace on April 19.

Charles Michel has arrived in Tbilisi earlier today, shortly after the majority of Georgian political parties signed his proposal.
