Parliament Speaker: Melia to take mandate and continue parliamentary activity

“EU bail for the release of the United National Movement (UNM) Chairman Nika Melia, demonstrates its big interest in Georgia, aiming to dwindle polarization,” Parliament Speaker Kakha Kuchava said on Sunday.

Kuchava believes Nika Melia should take his mandate in the parliament and continue the parliamentary activities.

Parliament Speaker stresses that political actors should fulfill the obligations under the EU-brokered compromise paper.

“Nika Melia is not a political prisoner. The court has not yet decided on his case.

EU made a big step forward and we should take this as a sign that they want to end the polarization in Georgia, that political actors should take their seats and continue working in the parliament,” Kuchava said.

The European Union posted bail on Saturday worth GEL 40,000 (USD 11,680) for the release of the United National Movement (UNM) Chairman Nika Melia from pre-trial detention. The move follows the EU-proposed April 19 Agreement between Georgian political parties.
