Parliament approves draft law on rules for selection of judges

The Parliament of Georgia today, with the first hearing, approved amendments to the law on Common Courts, initiated by Chairman of Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze and MPs Archil Talakvadze, Mamuka Mdinaradze, Anri Okhanashvili, Giorgi Kakhiani, Davit Matikashvili, and Guram Macharashvili.

The 89 lawmakers voted in favor of the draft law and 31 were against. The amendments to the Law on Common Courts set procedures and criteria for selection of the candidates for the Supreme Court judges, the qualification requirements of judges and the procedure for nominating candidates, selected by the High Council of Justice, to the Parliament.
