Parliament adopts constitutional changes with first reading

Georgian lawmakers approved the constitutional changes with the first reading by 126 votes pro and none con on Tuesday.

Based on the proposed amendments, the election threshold will be reduced from 5 to 2 per cent in the next two parliaments. Four instead of seven MPs will be able to form a parliamentary faction.

According to the agreement reached by political parties, a clause that qualified majority to elect General Prosecutor through a three-stage selection procedure has been taken out of the draft.

Support of seventy-six MPs would be needed to approve the General Prosecutor for a six-year term.
