Opposition to consider local elections boycott

The opposition considers boycotting local self-governance elections as a tool to pressure the government, said Gigi Ugulava, leader of the European Georgia party.

According to Gigi Ugulava, participation in the negotiations will be futile if political prisoners remain in the country and nothing changes. Local self-governance elections will not serve as a plebiscite.

“Why to invent new artificial mechanisms that create grounds for various interpretations? A plebiscite is simple. We should ask people do they want snap proportional elections or not,” Ugulava claimed.

Leader of the European Georgia party said that reform of the Central Election Commission, the fulfilment of the March 8 agreement and the release of political prisoners is crucial to exclude elections forging. That would create a precondition for the trust in elections.

“The current election administration has zero trust no matter if early elections, plebiscite or flying to the Moon,” Gigi Ugulava claimed.
