NCDC Head: World War III is ongoing over vaccines

Georgia holds direct negotiations with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and several other companies besides the Covax platform to import Covid-19 vaccines in Georgia, said Amiran Gamkrelidze, Head of the National Center for Diseases Control and Public Health (NCDC).

A tele-conference with Pfizer is scheduled for the next week to know the exact day when the first shots of Covid-19 vaccines will be imported.

According to the NCDC Head, immunization of about 200 000 people is planned by the end of May. Mass immunization of the Georgian population will begin from June.

“Distribution of vaccines is unfairly ongoing in the world. There is big competitiveness. The World War III is ongoing, in fact,” Amiran Gamkrelidze said.

Amiran Gamkrelidze reported that 227 million people are vaccinated all over the world as to the data for today and about 70% of those vaccinated comes on 10 big countries. Small dozes are designated to other countries.

The NCDC Head said the restrictions imposed in the country from November of 2020 turned effective. The epidemiological situation is stabilizing in Georgia. However, control on the fulfillment of recommendations was essential for another one year until 60-70% of the population would be vaccinated and the pandemic pulled back.
