MPs prepare constitutional amendments to lower electoral threshold

The parliamentary majority has prepared new constitutional amendments to lower the electoral threshold from 5 to 3%. The draft law will be initiated in the parliament in the coming days.

The adoption of the constitutional amendments requires 113 MPs’ support. At the moment, the ruling Georgian Dream party has 90 deputies in the parliament, the opposition Citizens has two and European socialists four which is not enough to endorse the changes.

The Georgian opposition parties that secured seats in the Georgian Parliament of 10th Convocation believe the 2020 parliamentary elections were a fraud. They have been demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of United National Movement Chairman Nika Melia and the co-founder of the TV channel Mtavari Arkhi Giorgi Rurua.

The current constitution stipulates a five percent threshold for the 2024 parliamentary elections.
