MIA seizes weapons during rally against Namakhvani HPP

Locals of the Tskaltubo district continue to protest against the Namakhvani hydropower project in Zhoneti village on Sunday.

Rally participants say the Turkish company ENKA must stop the construction.

During the rally, the police stopped two cars and seized weapons.

“MIA employees stopped two vehicles and seized a registered Winchester model firearm, a sniper rifle, a baseball bat, a blunt object, and the so-called bludgeon,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported.

MIA urges protesters to obey the lawful demands.

The Georgian Government awarded Turkish company ENKA the right to construct, own, and operate the Namakhvani HPP Cascade in the Imereti and Lechkhumi provinces back in 2019.

Locals believe the construction poses several risks to Tskaltubo and Tsageri municipalities.
