MEP Kaljurand believes Danielsson's paper regards all parties' interests, political leaders to take it seriously

“Christian Danielsson’s compromise paper takes into account the interests of all the parties. It’s balanced. And my suggestion to all political leaders will be to take it very seriously,” MEP Marina Kaljurand from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament told GPB regarding the EU-mediated negotiations between the government and opposition.

Marina Kaljurand believes the readiness of the Georgian Dream to sign the compromise text is positive news as everybody’s looking at the ruling party to make the first step.

“I’m not in a position to give specific recommendations because, in the end, the decisions have to be made by Georgian politicians. I think that Mr Danielsson did his utmost when he presented the compromise paper. It takes into account the interests of all the parties. It’s balanced. And my suggestion to all political leaders will be to take it very seriously.

Yesterday, I talked with my Georgian counterpart Maka Bochorishvili. She informed me also about the readiness of the Georgian Dream to sign the compromise text. It’s very positive news. I would encourage GD to do that because, as I said, all political parties have to agree. But of course, everybody’s looking at the ruling party, at a party in government to make the first step. So I would urge them to consider very carefully taking the first step, of course, with safeguards, with guarantees that there will be no additional topics put on the table by the opposition.

Somebody has to make the first step, and that’s important. And more generally, I can’t give specific advice, but my advice is just to put the party interests below the interests of the nation and people and come together to find a solution. It’s not easy for politicians. These decisions are not popular, but sometimes you have to make unpopular decisions because they will be the right ones in the long term,” MEP told GPB.

Georgian opposition parties that won seats in the Georgian Parliament of the 10th Convocation believe the 2020 parliamentary elections were a fraud. They have been demanding repeat parliamentary elections and the release of the United National Movement Chair, Nika Melia, and the co-founder of the TV channel Mtavari Arkhi Giorgi Rurua.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed earlier this week. EU mediator Christian Danielsson said he proposed a solution that puts the country’s interest first to the parties, but none of the political actors agreed on the solution.
