MEP Andrius Kubilius: Either Georgia is resolving the crisis, or it will pay some price

Member of the European Parliament Andrius Kubilius said that involvement of the EU in the solution of the Georgian political crisis, on the level of the European Council President Charles Michel and his special representative Christian Danielsson, was the highest that the EU could propose to Georgia during such an internal crisis.

MEP Kubilius warned that an internal crisis cannot continue in such a way. “Either Georgia is resolving its political crisis on advice of the highest leadership of the EU, on the proposal of Ambassador Danielsson, or Georgia will pay some price because its political parties, political leadership cannot resolve the crisis,” he stated.

MEP Andrius Kubilius commented about the reactions by some of the ruling Georgian Dream party representatives on the April 1 joint statement of MEPs. He said he heard that they were not taking the statement seriously.

Kubilius, one of the signatories of the April 1 joint statement, noted that the statement was signed by representatives of different groups and delegations in the European Parliament. These people have the status. “Their view, opinion, should be respected,” he said.

“If such a statement is made by such a group of people, usually that is supported by the majority of the [European] Parliament,” Kubilius stated.

MEP Andrius Kubilius participated in an online conference hosted by the Georgian Institute of Politics on April 7.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed. EU mediator Christian Danielsson said he proposed a solution that puts the country’s interest first to the parties, but none of the political actors agreed on the solution.
