Parliamentary majority sees UNM Chair's case as judicial process

The case of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party’s Chairman Nika Melia is a judicial process. There is no need to assure international partners of that. They expressed concern but did not say that Melia’s arrest is a violation of the law, said Nikoloz Samkharadze, majority MP.

According to the ruling Georgian Dream member, the international partners call for restraint, but UNM Chair deliberately decided not to obey the law.

“When the leader of the main opposition party disregards the law and chooses to go to the jail, this is a problem for us and our partners,” Nikoloz Samkharadze said.

Samkharadze also said it is a prerogative of the facilitator ambassadors to appoint the next round of negotiations between the ruling party and the opposition.

UNM Chair Nika Melia was arrested on February 23 following the special operation.
