Lithuanian FM: Lithuania is a true friend of Georgian people and true supporter of Georgia's Trans-Atlantic aspirations

“I would like to confirm that Lithuania is a true friend of Georgian people and a true supporter of Georgia’s Trans-Atlantic aspirations. We are here to help in any way we can, in any way is needed,” said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis after a meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

According to Lithuanian FM, Lithuania remains a supporter of the idea that the European Union, Trans-Atlantic partners can and should help eastern partners more.

“We are here to help in any way we can, in any way is needed. We discussed with the Minister the difficult situation in the region, in the South Caucasus and in the Eastern Partnership. We are witnessing more aggressive Russia gathering troops on the Eastern border of Ukraine, in Crimea, now assisting peace in Azerbaijan, between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the region is as volatile as ever. The pandemic crisis is not yet over. It is getting better in some countries, some countries managed better with the help of vaccines, with very heavy restrictions but not every other country has the same possibilities. Lithuania remains a supporter of the idea that the European Union, Trans-Atlantic partners can and should help eastern partners more. I’m convinced that quite soon the time will come where Lithuania could help Georgia on a bilateral basis as well. We see that many possibilities for our mutual cooperations are arising, they are possible, be it economic, be it political, be it regional,” Gabrielius Landsbergis stated at a joint press conference in Tbilisi.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania positively assessed the signing of Charles Michel-brokered document by opposition parties.

“We can offer more assistance on Georgia’s trans-Atlantic path with our expertise, with our know-how. But the political problems remain in Georgia. We truly commend the decision made by most political parties in Georgia to accept the deal offered by Charles Michel. Now, we have to make sure that all the parties join the agreement and the parliament is working and able to take up the reforms, judicial reform, electoral reform that is desperately needed by Georgia’s people and its political system. To make sure that we are not stopped by internal political problems on our real strategic issues like making Georgia more secure, safer and continue, first and foremost, on the trans-Atlantic path that Georgia set itself upon,” Lithuanian FM stated.
