Investigative activities continue at Varketili Subway Station

Investigative activities continue at Varketili Subway Station in Tbilisi. Director and three employees of “Kvarelremsheni” LTD are being questioned at Isani Regional Police Department. “Kvarelremsheni” LTD is the Company, which carried out rehabilitation works at Varketili Subway Station.

The ceiling collapsed in the station earlier this afternoon 4 months after completion of works and injured 14 passengers. Tbilisi City Hall paid 347 852 GEL to the Company to carry out the works. A criminal case is opened into the incident. The company is participating in 28 state tenders.

Specialists are studying other subway stations as well. Varketili station will resume working on January 31. The health condition of injured passengers is stable. Several patients were subjected to surgery. The injured are placed at 4 different clinics.

“We are inspecting every object in Tbilisi, kindergartens, sports complexes, subway stations. Unfortunately, results of poor quality works are following us step by step,” Kakha Kaladze, Tbilisi Mayor stated during the city governmental sitting.

Kaladze said that Tbilisi City Hall and Healthcare Ministry would cover expenses for medication of the 14 passengers, injured as a result of collapse of the ceiling at Varketili Subway Station. “All the responsible persons will be held accountable,” Kaladze stated.

Before completion of the investigation, all sides agree that rehabilitation works at the subway station were carried out with violation of safety norms. After rehabilitation works were carried out, 2 companies issued expertise conclusions. Authors of the conclusion claim that they evaluated the volume of works only. It remains unclear whether or not quality of the done work was examined.
