The Guardian: Georgia accuses Russia of war crimes during 2008 conflict

“It is an open secret that Russia has been lobbying in public and in private for a favourable outcome, mumbling dark threats that it will deratify the European convention on human rights and starve the court of funding if the case goes against it,” Ben Emmerson, Georgia’s British lawyer said during the final oral hearing into case Georgia vs. Russia at the European Court of Human Rights.

Georgia has accused Russia of war crimes, human rights violations and a “rampage” across its territory during the bitter military conflict between the countries almost 10 years ago. In closing evidence before the European court of human rights in Strasbourg on Wednesday, the Georgian government said Moscow was guilty of multiple violations during the August 2008 fighting, The Guardian reports.

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights considered a suit filed by Georgia against Russia in connection with the 2008 armed conflict between Georgia and Russia.
