Giorgi Gakharia on Munich Security Conference

The growing role of Georgia in the context of European and Black Sea security architecture was clearly demonstrated at the Munich Security Conference, – Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia told reporters while summing up the meetings held within the 56th Munich Security Conference.

“In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger emphasized Georgia and said that the European security architecture without the security of Georgia and Ukraine is inconceivable. This is a narrative and a topic that we discussed today during the meetings”, – Giorgi Gakharia said.

According to Prime Minister, the most important meeting was held with the US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. As he noted, the bilateral cooperation in the field of security, as well as joint defense projects, were discussed in detail.

“In November 2019, the programs under which we work with the United States were revised. We also discussed Georgia’s contribution to Afghanistan and international missions. It was a key meeting for planning cooperation for the coming years, first and foremost in the field of security and defense” – Head of Government of Georgia stated.

According to Giorgi Gakharia, other important bilateral meetings were also held, which mainly focused on Georgia’s role in the architecture of European security.
“Georgia’s growing role in the context of Black Sea security, well as in terms of cybersecurity was clearly demonstrated. These are areas in which our responsibility is increasing, and Georgia should be a reliable and stable partner” – PM added.

Prime Minister spoke about the meeting held with the International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

According to the head of the government, he once again emphasized the importance to investigate the facts of the ethnic cleansing against Georgians during the August 2008 war and catastrophic humanitarian violations against citizens in shortest possible time.
