Georgia today marks the 31st anniversary of the 9 April tragedy.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has paid tribute to the memory of heroes who laid down their lives for the freedom and independence of Georgia.

Georgian PM laid tulips at the memorial in remembrance of those who died during the demonstration.

Giorgi Gakharia noted that “we must remember the past and the feeling of unity that led Georgia from 9 April 1989 to 9 April 1991.”

“Thirty-one years ago, on 9 April 1989, the Soviet Army committed a crime. This crime was the greatest tragedy in the history of our country, though it was also the greatest hope, and this hope was realized. We all remember the new 9 April, in 1991, when the country declared independence and we began building statehood in recent history. We must always honor the memory of our heroes,” Giorgi Gakharia stated.
