GD to consider all options within electoral reform

“With the support and consent of the parliamentary majority, we want to express our clear support for the electoral reform, launched today with the first meeting of the working group”, the leader of the parliamentary majority Mamuka Mdinaradze declared after Georgian Dream’s Political Council meeting.

As he notes, the parliamentary majority will actively participate in this historic and unprecedented electoral reform.

According to Mamuka Mdinaradze, the ruling team considers all options, including the zero-threshold-system within electoral reform. “Although, any decision needs solid argumentation to find out which option is better for the long-term, democratic and stable development of the country”, he added.

Mamuka Mdinaradze pointed out that the Girchi party members voiced readiness to enter parliament if zero-threshold-system is adopted.

“We have already made a commitment that if there are enough mandates, the electoral threshold for the 2024 parliamentary elections will be from zero to three percent. It means that the ruling team considers all options, including the barrier-free system. Unfortunately, we have not heard the other parliamentary parties’ attitudes, whether they share Girchi’s position or not. I think the society deserves to know their position about this issue,” Mdinaradze said.
