Georgian Ambassador to U.S. – Talks about expectations of sanctions to Georgia by U.S. were groundless from the beginning

Talks about expectations of imposition of sanctions to Georgia by the U.S. were absolutely groundless from the beginning – Davit Bakradze, Georgian Ambassador to the U.S. said when commenting about the draft-bill approved by Assigns Committee of Senate about conditions of 15% cut of financing to Georgia.

Bakradze told Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) that strategic partnership between Georgia and U.S. was on the highest level that was expressed in different legislative acts adopted by US Senate and Congress as well as in the high-level visit that Georgia expected next week.

“The condition that was mentioned in the draft project of Chamber of Representatives is missing in the version approved by the Senate. It is important to clarify what document we are talking about. This is a budgetary act where, in foreign aid part, we see, that, on the one hand, support to Georgia increases.  In comparison to the situation 3 years ago, the finances are increased by 35 million, and in comparison to 4 years ago – by 50 million. This aid is used for strengthening defense capabilities, bilateral security, deepening of cooperation and boosting economy,” Bakradze said.

According to Georgian Ambassador, the U.S. supported Georgia’s territorial integrity and this would become more clear during the visit of Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State to Georgia.

“As for the second and more important part of the document, the budget text says it clear, first mentioned in 2017 and this remains unchanged afterwards, that US supports Georgia’s territorial integrity and non-recognition policy that is an important message for other countries of the world. This means that U.S. is unwavering in support of Georgia’s territorial integrity,” Bakradze said.
