European Georgia: Crisis not to be resolved without elections, release of political prisoners

The ruling party and opposition have to agree on all the points proposed by the European Council President Charles Michel, Giga Bokeria, Chairman of the European Georgia party, told reporters.

According to Giga Bokeria, two issues – early elections and the release of political prisoners – need to be resolved primarily in order to recommence the negotiations process.

“We want to agree on all the points, but in order to open the process. There are two necessary points – early elections and political prisoners. In the end, we will definitely have a result, but I cannot tell exactly what kind of result we will have.

The document offered by President Michel cannot be modified. The mediation is underway on the basis of this document. All points must be agreed upon. We are flexible about how we can get to early elections, but naturally the crisis will not be eased without elections, a necessary part of which is the release of political prisoners,” Bokeria said.

Charles Michel, the European Council President, proposed a six-point draft agreement to be negotiated to the ruling Georgian Dream Party and the opposition.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed. EU mediator Christian Danielsson said he proposed a solution that puts the country’s interest first to the parties, but none of the political actors agreed on the solution.
