Davit Zalkaliani – Safe Europe is impossible without safe Black Sea region

“The Black Sea region should become the region of peace and sustainable development where the countries will direct their joint efforts at enhancement of stability and improvement of welfare – Davit Zalkaliani, Minister of Foreign Affairs said during the discussions held on the sideline of the Munich Security Conference.

Based on the information provided by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zalkaliani talked about the role of NATO in the Black Sea basin and Georgia’s involvement in coping with security challenges together with NATO member and partner states.

“Safe Europe is impossible without safe Black Sea region. It is not surprising that NATO is concerned about the annexation of Crimea by Russia, the crisis that Russia created in east Ukraine and the Azov Sea. All this makes Russian strategy evident: to make its force for political purposes at the expense of sovereign countries of the region. It is evident that Russia aims at frightening the counties, which are alliances of the west and make new division lines and spheres of influence,” Zalkaliani said.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister talked about Russian policy, the situation across the occupied territories of Georgia, continuing militarization and Georgia’s aspiration to become a NATO member.

Georgian Foreign Minister is participation in the 55th Munich Security Conference. The Georgian delegation is headed by Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze.
