Davit Zalkaliani: ECHR judgment is mandatory for Russian Federation

The judgment made by Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is essentially important ruling and a victory for Georgia,  –  Minister of Foreign Affairs Davit Zalkaliani made this statement.

As Minister explained, the judgment of ECHR is mandatory for the Russian Federation and Georgia will use all appropriate leverage for it.

“We will use all the tools we have to create appropriate mechanisms for the execution of this judgment. There is also a format of Deputies of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. This is a body which shall assess the execution of the judgment by the Russian Federation. We will constantly discuss this issue within the framework of this format. This is one of the important leverages for holding the Russian Federation accountable to the international community about the fulfillment of this judgment,” Davit Zalkaliani said.

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)  announced its judgment by sixteen votes to one in the case of Georgia v. Russia, regarding the arrest, detention and collective expulsion of Georgian nationals from Russia in the autumn of 2006.

The European Court of Human Rights held by sixteen votes to one that Russia has to pay Georgia 10,000,000 euros for non-pecuniary damage suffered by a group of at least 1,500 Georgian nationals.
