CoE Committee of Ministers to study fulfillment of Strasbourg Court’s verdict by Russia

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will study the issue of the fulfillment of the verdict made by Strasbourg Court into the case of mass deportation of Georgian citizens from the Russian Federations territory.

According to the webpage of Council of Europe, the case has to do with the decision made by Grand Chamber of Strasbourg Court on January 31 of 2019. The Court found Russia guilty of the harsh violation of human rights of Georgian citizens deported in 2006 and imposed imposition of compensation to the victims.

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will discuss fulfillment of verdicts of Strasbourg Court by Russia on September 23-25.

On January 31, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights announced the Judgment concerning Georgian citizens’ deportation from Russia. Based on the decision, Russia has to pay Georgia 10,000,000 euros (EUR) in respect of non-pecuniary damage suffered by a group of at least 1,500 Georgian nationals.

That amount is to be distributed to the individual victims of 2006 mass deportation from Russia. The Russian Federation was given a 3-month term to pay moral compensation to the Georgian state.
