Charles Michel believes political crisis is over in Georgia

According to the European Council President Charles Michel, the signing of the agreement by political leaders is a remarkable achievement.

He believes the political crisis in Georgia is coming to an end, and political involvement has already become sustainable. President Michel made these remarks during a press conference held after the meeting with Georgian President Salome Zourbabichvili on April 20.

“It’s pleasure for me to be in Tbilisi again. I’m particularly pleased to visit today after political leaders signed this agreement. The political crisis is over, and constant political engagement needs to be sustained. Today marks a new beginning and the start of the hard work to kick Georgia forwards along its EU-Atlantic path. And let me congratulate Georgian leaders for reaching this agreement. This achievement is yours. I know It was not easy.

I would like to thank the Prime Minister for his leadership. I would like to thank the opposition party leaders and members of the parliament for their courage to look for compromise, and I hope others will join. I would also like to thank you, Madam President, for your statements, for your wisdom.

More hard work starts today. The agreement presents the best foundation for reforms, election reform, justice reform and consolidating the rule of law. This agreement is not a finish line. It is the starting point for your way forward to consolidate Georgia’s democracy. I am also pleased that this ensures the power-sharing in the Parliament. It is the basis for a vibrant and meaningful functioning of Parliament”, Charles Michel said.

According to Michel, the European Union is Georgia’s largest donor and this assistant will continue if Georgia works deep in reforms.

“We express our full readiness for cooperation, friendship, our cooperation is based on common interests, which is reflected in practical steps,”  European Council President said.

Charles Michel said he welcomes the idea of bringing together the leaders of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova to discuss the Association Agreement.

“For Georgia, as for any democracy, full respect for the democratic values and effective functioning of institutions are a must. Its trust and confidence enhance legitimacy. This trust and confidence are what you now need to strengthen,” he added.

The Georgian political parties signed a compromise agreement, A Way Ahead for Georgia, submitted to the parties by the European Council President Charles Michel, at the Orbeliani Palace on April 19.

Charles Michel has arrived in Tbilisi earlier today, shortly after the majority of Georgian political parties signed his proposal.
