The European Union considers that the advices and recommendations of the Venice Commission are too important. I hope these recommendations will be implemented – Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, said.

The Ambassador positively evaluates the fact that the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia requested for recommendations regarding the bill on criteria and procedures of selection of the Supreme Court judicial candidates.

“I had the honor to meet with Venice Commission delegation. We have reviewed the general context of the appointment of judges. I am glad that the Speaker of the Parliament addressed the Venice Commission for recommendations. The European Union considers that the advices and recommendations of the Venice Commission are important. I hope that these recommendations will be implemented.

We will discuss this with the Speaker of Parliament and other interested people. As for the appointment of a number of judges by the next convocation of the Parliament, the Venice Commission understands that this is a political recommendation. However, this is not included into the list of major recommendations. The main recommendations apply to judicial and technical issues. This issue should be considered,” Hartzell said.

The Venice Commission, an Advisory Board of the Council of Europe, published the recommendations on April 16. According to one of the recommendations of the Venice Commission, conducting secret ballots in the High Council of Justice should be abolished.
