Aslan Bzhania - Apart from the Geneva format, Georgia and Abkhazia need a bilateral platform for talks

“Apart from the Geneva format, Georgia and Abkhazia need a bilateral platform for talks,” Aslan Bzhania, an opposition leader who has won so-called presidential elections in Russian-occupied Abkhazia said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Bzhania noted that within the framework of the bilateral negotiations, minor border issues could be solved.

“Georgians and Georgia are our neighbours. Whether we like it or not, we have contacts regarding Georgian and Abkhazian citizens. Unfortunately, many of our citizens have to go there to seek medical care. They even commit crimes in the territory of Abkhazia and hide in Georgia or vice-versa. You know that we are jointly operating the Enguri Dam as well,” Aslan Bzhania said.

In order to solve those issues, Bzhania believes certain format for negotiations could be set up.

Alsan Bzhania added that Abkhazia has been receiving messages from various public institutions in Georgia indicating that certain Georgian political parties would like to engage in more intense dialogue.
