Archil Talakvadze: Election date - October 31 remains in force

The date of the elections remains in force and we will ensure the opportunities for election campaigning as much as possible, – the Speaker of Georgian Parliament Archil Talakvadze stated at the extraordinary sitting discussing the Constitutional amendments.

As Talakvadze explained, the previous version of the Constitution allowed the government to maneuver with election dates, but today this is not possible. Accordingly, as Talakvadze noted election date is set by the new edition of constitution and elections will be held on October 31.

“Of course, we will ensure democratic, free, and transparent elections. I reiterate this is an opportunity to strengthen Georgia’s democracy, and we will prove to our citizens, our partners, that Georgia continues to strengthen democracy and Georgia continues to develop democratically.

Once again I urge everyone to support the constitutional change related to the electoral system. This will give us a system as close to proportional as possible, which will help us form a stable political system”, – said Archil Talakvadze.ა

As for the early elections, Archil Talakvadze said, “If this is held between 2020 and 2024, according to the draft amendments, any possible early elections will be held under the same system we are going to reach an agreement today.”
