Anti-Namakhvani HPP protesters claim their protest is peaceful

Anti-Namakhvani HPP protesters have gathered in front of the company ENKA office. Organizers claim that their protest is peaceful.

Protesters demand a meeting with a company representative. According to them, they have questions about Namakhvane HPP, which must be answered.

“If any of the protesters try to attack the company’s office, this will be a provocation, the action against the will of the rally organizers,” Varlam Goletiani, one of the organizers, said.

As the correspondent of Georgian Public Broadcaster reports, protesters plan to return to the Gumati settlement from the ENKA office.

Protesters demanded to enter the village of Namakhvani to continue the protest and broke through the metal fences placed by the law enforcers today. The event resulted in the clash between the protesters and the law enforcement officers. MIA released a statement calling on the protesters to obey the lawful request of the police.

Protests against the Namakhvani HPP construction in the Rioni Valley have been underway for months now. Anti-HPP activists are concerned about the HPP construction that could harm the environment.
