Ambassador of Italy – Opposition’s activities should remain within the frames of law

We do not dictate to the Georgian political forces which election system is more suitable to the country. This is a sovereign choice – Ambassador of Italy to Georgia H.E. Antonio Enrico Bartoli said after the meeting with leaders of Georgian oppositional parties.

Ambassador said that the activities of the opposition had to remain within the framework of the law.

Bartoli said that the opposition had expressed disappointment about non-fulfillment of the promise on part of the ruling party about making constitutional changes regarding transformation onto proportional system of elections for 2020 parliamentary polls.

“We, the international community, underlined that there was wide consensus about transformation onto the proportional system of elections, and it is clear that postponement of the process generated distrust and disappointment. But we also stressed that activities of the opposition should remain within the frames of the law,” said Ambassador of Italy to Georgia.

Leaders of the opposition parties met with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia. The meeting was held at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Tbilisi.
