National military industry to be priority for Defense Ministry

The development of the national military industry would be a priority for the next years.

The acting Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Gharibashvili underlined during the joint sitting of several parliamentary committees that about 40 heavy vehicles produced in Georgia became part of the armed forces’ equipment in 2020 for the first time in the history of the Georgian army.

The candidate minister accentuated the modernization of logistical equipment. According to Irakli Gharibashvili, Georgia intended to buy additional Javeline anti-tank missiles in 2021 through cooperation with strategic partners.

The acting minister focused on relations with NATO. He believes Georgia never had such high-level political and practical support from NATO. Gharibashvili said Georgia is working to fulfill the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP) updated in December.

The acting minister added Georgia would continue to participate in the international peacekeeping missions to ensure global peace and security. Irakli Gharibashvili also touched upon handling hybrid-type challenges by strengthening intelligence and cyber-attack mechanisms.
