The 2020 parliamentary elections made it clear that the polarization of public political sentiments, intolerance between political groups and, consequently, the institutional building of deliberative democracy stand a significant challenge in the country. Naturally, the media, as a reflection of reality, is also sharply polarized. Unfortunately, the media often have a negative objective, and the society lacks the perspective of development, critical discussion and analysis of different political views.
Excessive negativity deepens public polarization. Stimulates nihilism and suppresses the ability to make rational choices through emotional manipulation, which ultimately serves to deepen the crisis of democracy.
The existence and significant strengthening of the Georgian Public Broadcaster as an existentially necessary institution of democracy become even more acute against this background.
For its part, GPB must promote mainstreaming, critical thinking and constructive consideration of vital issues for the public, which are necessary to overcome the divisions and unacceptability, increase confidence in the political process and strengthen the building of democratic institutions.
It is crucial to offer the groups participating in the political process such a constructive platform for the post-parliamentary elections and the self-government elections discussion.
GPB should develop into a media-neutral platform for accountability of political and civil entities to the public.
As these essential tasks are implemented, GPB news and socio-political programs will accurately meet the public interest, help the country overcome polarization and interdependence and, consequently, enact development-oriented processes.
