An emergency sitting of the Georgian government was held at the administration of Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili this afternoon in reaction to the video footage released on September 18 that uncovered torture extorted against inmates in Gldani # 8 Prison.
President personally instructed Vano Merabishvili Georgia’s Prime Minister for carrying out staff changes and fundamental reforms in the penitentiary system.
“I will ensure that the torture and humiliation is eliminated in the penitentiary system. I will see this through,” Merabishvili said during the governmental sitting.
The Prime Minister said that yesterday’s video footage was "outrageous" and that all the persons involved in the crime are arrested and will stand trial.
"The crime committed in Gldani prison is outrageous, so all those who are involved in this crime have been arrested and they will stand trial. All the actual doers and organizers of this crime will be punished”, Merabishvili said.
