Death toll rises in Barcelona terror attack

Publish Time 2017-08-18 16:07:00

The death toll in the terror attacks in Spain rose to 14 Friday after a woman injured in a seaside resort died – while authorities hunt for an 18-year-old man suspected of driving the van that plowed into pedestrians in Barcelona.

Police shot dead five would-be attackers in the resort town of Cambrils, south of Barcelona, after suspected Islamist militant Moussa Oukabir drove the van into crowds on a bustling avenue in the center of Barcelona.

Tourists ran for their lives as gunfire broke out close to the town’s beachfront promenade early Friday. A British tourist said families and residents were ordered to take cover as bullets flew, the Telegraph reported.

Authorities revealed that a 12-strong terror cell thought to have been behind the two attacks is believed to have been planning an atrocity with gas canisters, the paper reported.

A major manhunt is underway for Oukabir, who is believed to have fled unarmed from the scene of the attack on the Las Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona.

Three people have so far been arrested in the attack, including Driss Oukabir, Moussa’s elder brother. Driss has denied any involvement in the massacre.

Meanwhile, thousands of people including Spain’s king and prime minister held a minute of silence for the victims of the two incidents.

King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, along with Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont, stood in front of the crowd in Placa de Cataluyna during the remembrance.

The participants broke into applause before the crowd chanted repeatedly: “I am not afraid! I am not afraid!”
