Herbert Salber arrived at the Foreign Affairs Ministry - how EU representative explained his statement
Publish Time 2017-05-19 18:06:00
EU Special Representative Herbert Salber has held a meeting with Davit Dondua, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry today. The talks focused on the statement made by Salber in Tskhinvali.
After the meeting Herbert Salber made a comment for media representatives.
"I am grateful to you for coming here. I would like to tell you that at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs we discussed issues that caused concerns. I would like to clarify this: The European Union fully supports Georgia's territorial integrity. This is a very clear and obvious principle for me and I, as a representative of the EU in the South Caucasus, support this principle. I always emphasize this. As for the elections in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, the EU has unequivocally declared that it does not recognize the framework in which the elections were held. I support this position. At the same time, the EU is committed to promoting peaceful resolution of the conflict. For this reason the EU and I personally are involved in the Geneva discussions. This is my mandate,” - EU Special Representative said.
As a reminder, Herbert Salber congratulated Anatoli Bibilov on victory in so called presidential elections several days ago.
