Ceremony of taking oath held at Liberty Square

More than 300 newly-summoned military servicemen took oath at Liberty Square today. Representatives of the Georgian government, accredited ambassadors and military attaches, heads of Defense Ministry and General Staff and ordinary citizens attended the ceremony. The battalions having reached significant success in and outside the country were present at the Liberty Square. A moment of silence was observed to those fallen for Georgia’s territorial integrity and in international missions. Georgia’s national anthem was performed by Mdzlevari ensemble. Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili congratulated the Georgian population and armed forces on the day. Defense Minister Levan Izoria addressed the military servicemen.

Independence Day is celebrated in Georgia on May 26. Georgia has been marking the day of restoration independence for 26 years since following the fall of the Soviet Union. After Georgia's declaration of independence on 9 April 1991, the government set on 26 May 1991 Georgia's first presidential election, which was won by Zviad Gamsakhurdia. It commemorates the 26 May 1918 adoption of the Act of Independence, which established the Democratic Republic of Georgia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. This year activities organized on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day were also dedicated to the 850th jubilee of Shota Rustaveli and his poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin.” All events responded to the concept “I am from country of Rustaveli.” Solemn activities were held throughout the day both in Tbilisi and different regions of Georgia. The epicenters of main activities in Tbilisi were Rustaveli Avenue and Liberty Square. More than 300 newly-summoned military servicemen took oath at Liberty Square today. Ministries were represented with their pavilions. Celebrative activities took place in different cities. Georgia received congratulation messages from world leaders. A gala concert with participation of pop and opera singers and National Symphonic Orchestra will wrap up the solemn activities. The concert at Rose Square will begin at 21:00.

May 26 is Birthday of Merab Kostava

Today is the birthday of national hero of Georgia – Merab Kostava. Georgian politicians and ordinary citizens paid tribute to Kostava’s memory at Mtatsminda Pantheon. Merab Kostava was a Georgian dissident, musician and poet; one of the leaders of the National-Liberation movement in Georgia. He was born in 1939 in Tbilisi. Kostava died in a car accident on October 13, 1989.

Chisinau Mayor, City Officials Detained In Corruption Case

Moldovan anticorruption prosecutors have detained the mayor of Chisinau and several other city officials on suspicion of corruption.Dorin Chirtoaca and the other officials, including a deputy mayor, were taken to Moldova's National Anticorruption Center (CNA) on the evening of May 25 and ordered held for 72 hours after prosecutors searched city hall for several hours.The CNA accuses Chirtoaca of instructing his deputy to sign a contract with Austrian company EME Parkleitsystem GmbH.Chirtoaca suspended the contract with the company this month. Neither Chirtoaca nor the Austrian company has commented on the accusations.The CNA said the company won contracts due to "concerted actions" from city hall officials. Seven other officials, including the city's two deputy mayors, have been recently detained in the case.Chirtoaca, 38, is the deputy chairman of the Liberal Party. He has been mayor of Chisinau since 2007 and supports reunifying the country with neighboring Romania. All 11 Liberal Party lawmakers in Moldova's 101-seat parliament were absent from the May 26 session, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

Theatrical show at Rabati Fortress

The 12th century Georgia was enliven at Rabati Fortress, a medieval castle complex in Akhaltsikhe town today. Tourism National Administration held a theatrical show “Be Part of History” involving actors, decorations, performances and installations. Actors of Movement Theater, masters of fighting art and fortress guards took part in the show as well. This year activities organized on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day marked on May 26 are also dedicated to the 850th jubilee of Shota Rustaveli and his poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin.” All events respond to the concept “I am from country of Rustaveli.”

Twenty-six years ago we took a step and declared aloud on restoring Georgia’s independence, - Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili sad at Liberty Square, Tbilisi. According to President, there is still a path from independence to freedom. “We managed to establish the Georgian state that is really independent, developing its policy due to the only right source – people’s will. But there is still a path from independence to freedom,” he said. “Where does freedom begin? It is hardly achievable as freedom means recognition of others’ rights. No nation is free if they don’t recognize other people’s freedom,” Margvelashvili remarked.

Protecting Georgia and supporting its territorial integrity, we protect our countries at a certain extent, - President of NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly Paolo Alli said at the joint press-conference with Georgia’s Parliamentary Speaker. According to Alli, NATO would like to underline full support towards Georgia. He has referred to the contribution of Georgia to international missions especially in Afghanistan. “We realize that stability and security is very important for regional stability that is significant for all western countries,” he said. As Alli maintained, Georgia is occupying more and more significant position in the present geo-political environment.  “From our point of view, you are on the right path but there still is the room for improvement,” he added.
