Georgian FM delivers speech at UNSC
Update Time: 2017-02-22 20:15:00
While the UN, OSCE and EU have been engaged in international talks between Georgia and Russia as the co-moderators of the Geneva International Discussions for 8 years now, more needs to be done to deliver on tangible results, which first and foremost requires political will and commitment from all, - Georgia’s Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze said while delivering speech at United Nations Security Council. “It requires more stewardship on behalf of the Co-Chairs and the Secretary-General in guiding and assessing the process based on the principles and norms of international law. We should all support the Secretary-General in assuming stronger leadership role.My country has been long committed to the constructive and peaceful policy of reconciliation and confidence building. Let me stress, that Georgia is committed to good neighborly relations and strives to have peace in the region. It was in this spirit that Georgia undertook the unilateral non-use of force commitment, which was never reciprocated.Since 2012, the Government of Georgia has been seeking the de-escalation of relations with the Russian Federation, by making constructive and practical steps. We have established dialogue on issues related to trade, transport, people-to-people relations, aimed at de-escalation tensions, which has provided some positive outcomes. We work constructively in the format of Geneva International Discussions, open for constructive negotiations. Last year was marked by the restoration of the Gali Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism. As concerns the relations with our compatriots living in the occupied territories, the ethnic Abkhaz and Ossetians, are an integral part of our common history and future, despite the current artificial barriers. There is no alternative to the return of the IPDs and refugees to their homes and to the full re-integration of all ethnicities into a vibrant society where human rights and individual freedoms as well as cultural and linguistic diversity of different communities are the Georgian State’s top priorities. We firmly pursue the engagement, confidence building and reconciliation process with the people living in the occupied territories. We are offering all benefits which are open to Georgian citizens. We stand ready to offer all the progress we will be having on our development path,” Janelidze stated.

Aliyev Appoints Wife as First Vice President of Azerbaijan
Update Time: 2017-02-21 16:52:00
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has appointed his wife as first vice president, a newly created post that puts her first in line to take over if he dies or is incapacitated.Aliyev's order on the appointment of his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, was posted on the presidential website on February 21. The positions of first vice president and two lower-tier vice presidents were among the constitutional amendments introduced in a referendum in the tightly controlled Caspian Sea country in September 2016.The constitution now stipulates that if the president becomes incapable of discharging his duties, the first vice president takes over. Before the referendum, it was the prime minister. The referendum was challenged by opposition politicians and activists who said that it tightened Aliyev's grip on power in the oil-rich former Soviet republic, which he has ruled since he succeeded his father in 2003.The referendum also extended the length of presidential terms from five years to seven years and scrapped an age requirement for candidates, sparking speculation that Aliyev was grooming his son Heidar, who was 19 years old at the time, to eventually become president.Mehriban Aliyeva, 52, is a deputy chairwoman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party. She is also the head of the Heidar Aliyev Foundation -- a large nongovernmental organization named after her husband's father, who ruled newly independent Azerbaijan with an iron fist in 1993-2003. He died in December 2003, two months after steering his son into the presidency, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.

Supervision of financial sector to go back to National Bank
Update Time: 2017-02-21 16:14:00
Supervision function of the financial sector will return to National Bank of Georgia, First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Dimitri Kumsishvili said at a press conference after the governmental sitting. Kumsishvili said the government presented 17 draft-bills in that regard. "In 2015, the Parliament passed the draft of the amendments, according to which, the supervision of the financial sector was to move to the independent legal person of public law, Financial Supervisory Agency. After this, the bill was appealed in the Constitutional Court. We have said several times that, as a result of recent changes, we felt that the supervision of the financial sector should have returned to the National Bank. Therefore, we no longer expect the Constitutional Court's judgment in this matter, and we will submit a bill to the Parliament.I also want to say that we are very active in the process of negotiations with the IMF, which consider this decision very important and positive", - said Kumsishvili. The Financial Supervisory Service was separated from the National Bank after Tamaz Mechiauri and Nodar Ebanoidze, the members of the previous Parliament, submitted the relevant draft law, which was supported by the parliamentary majority. Consideration of the bill was accompanied by noise and commotion in the Parliament. The bill was vetoed by the President, though the majority managed to override the veto.

Trump Chooses H.R. McMaster as National Security Adviser
Update Time: 2017-02-21 12:56:00
US President Donald Trump appointed Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster as his new national security adviser on Monday, picking a widely respected military strategist known for challenging conventional thinking and helping to turn around the Iraq war in its darkest days.Mr. Trump made the announcement at his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he interviewed candidates over the holiday weekend to replace Michael T. Flynn, who was forced out after withholding information from Vice President Mike Pence about a call with Russia’s ambassador, The New York Times reports.Unlike Mr. Flynn, who served as a campaign adviser last year, General McMaster has no links to Mr. Trump and is not thought of as being as ideological as the man he will replace. A battle-tested veteran of both the Persian Gulf war and the second Iraq war, General McMaster is considered one of the military’s most independent-minded officers, sometimes at a cost to his own career. The selection encouraged Republicans who admire General McMaster and waged a behind-the-scenes campaign to persuade Mr. Trump to select him. Key to the choice was Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, an Army veteran who once served under General McMaster and suggested him to the White House. A coterie of other national security conservatives, including a top aide to Senator John McCain of Arizona, also lobbied for him, and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who has worked with General McMaster, encouraged him to take the job.
